We have news, and it's very small. Mouse-sized in fact, and currently asleep in a matchbox.
Maileg has moved into Binky, and honestly, we're all a bit giddy about it. If you've never met Maileg before, picture a mouse in a hand-stitched nightie, tucked into a matchbox bed with a tiny blanket, waiting for a child to wake her up and take her somewhere marvellous. Now picture a whole world built around her: castles, cradles, bunk beds, a pumpkin carriage, and a suitcase that opens into a house. That's Maileg. And now it's here.
I will never forget the first time I was introduced to Maileg. I was simply smitten with the detail and quality of these beautiful toys, and with them arriving in gorgeous little matchboxes, well. You can simply imagine them living in your home like little Borrowers, tucked behind the skirting board and only coming out when the house goes quiet. The magic, storytelling and beauty of this brand is something that cannot be replicated, and we are so incredibly proud to have been given the opportunity to stock it.
First, the question everyone asks: how do you say it? It's “My-lye”. Say it out loud a few times, because you'll be saying it a lot. (We've been practising in the stockroom. The mice have been very patient with us.)
I'll also confess to a soft spot that has nothing to do with Denmark. Every time I think of Maileg, it takes me straight to one of my most favourite places: the Highlands of Scotland, and Mallaig (no relation, sadly, just a happy coincidence of names). Mallaig is only a short ferry ride from the Sleat peninsula on the Isle of Skye, which is where you'll find me in my happy place. Those of you who know a little about me will know that's where my heart belongs, so it's an added bonus for me. 🙂
Though I am pretty sure there are no dreich days in Maileg’s world unlike in up in the highlands of late, and I would expect an afternoon spent playing with you Maileg toys would be the perfect tonic to a grey and drizzly day.
So pop the kettle on. We'd love to introduce you properly.
The Maileg story: a pixie, a sketchbook and a very good idea
Maileg was founded in Denmark in 1999 by Dorthe Mailil and her husband, Erik. The name is a little family secret hiding in plain sight: it's their surname, Mailil, joined to leg, the Danish word for play. So Maileg simply means “the Mailils' play”. We think that's lovely, and also slightly annoyed we didn't think of it first.
Dorthe is a designer and illustrator who lives and works in Herning, Denmark. She studied graphic design at the Danish Design School, with time studying art in Marseille and Paris too, and you can see that French storybook charm in every frilly collar. The whole thing started with a class project: a little clay pixie with exaggerated proportions and plenty of attitude. One pixie became a family of pixies. Clay became fabric. And the rest, as they say, is a very well-dressed mouse.
Today Dorthe is still Maileg's owner and Creative Director, and still guides every design. She carries a sketchbook everywhere and has been known to wake in the night with a new idea, which explains a lot about how a mouse ended up with a pumpkin carriage. More than 25 years on, the family has grown into mice, bunnies, teddies, baby toys, dollhouses, castles and festive decorations, sold all over the world. Not bad for a pixie.
What we love most is why they started. Back in 1999, toy shelves were filling up with flashing, beeping, here-today-gone-tomorrow trends. Dorthe and Erik wanted the opposite: slow, gentle toys with no batteries and no screens, where the child writes the story. That's a philosophy we can get behind with both arms.
Made with care (and checked by grown-ups with clipboards)
Pick up a Maileg mouse and you'll feel the difference straight away. They're made from natural materials like cotton, linen, wool, wood and metal, and each one is handmade or hand-finished. That means no two are exactly alike. One mouse might have an ear sitting a touch higher, or a foot turned slightly out. Maileg is very clear that these little quirks aren't faults, they're character. We like to think of them as freckles.
The furniture is just as considered. The cradles, bunk beds and cars are made of metal, the clothes are properly stitched, and the tiny accessories are the kind of detail that makes grown-ups go “oh!” out loud.
Behind the charm there's some serious work, too:
- Safety tested. Maileg toys are tested with certified third-party laboratories and meet European toy safety standards (EN 71), REACH rules on chemicals, and the US toy standard ASTM F963.
- People and planet. Maileg uses the UN Global Compact's ten principles, which cover human rights, fair labour, the environment and anti-corruption, as its guide.
- Real relationships. Their quality team visits suppliers regularly and keeps long-term partnerships rather than chasing the cheapest factory of the month.
- Thoughtful packaging. Boxes are mainly recycled or FSC-certified card and paper, plastic bags are only used when something genuinely needs protecting, and boxes are sized to avoid wasted space.
And the best bit of eco-thinking of all? Maileg toys are built to be passed down. Their whole idea is that one day your child hands their mouse to the next generation of the family. A toy that lasts 30 years is about the greenest toy there is.
What Maileg play is all about
Maileg play is small-world play at its most magical. There are no batteries, no screens and no instructions. There's just a mouse, a matchbox and whatever your child dreams up next.
Maileg describes its toys as “loyal companions”, and that's exactly how children treat them. A Little Sister Mouse in her Matchbox goes in a coat pocket to nursery. She has breakfast at the table. She gets tucked in at night, and woken up very early the next morning. The Sleepy Wakey Baby Mouse even has a sleepy face on one side and a wide-awake face on the other, which is more than most of us manage before 7am.
The stories often borrow from the fairytales Danish children grew up with. The Princess and the Pea Big Sister Mouse is a nod to Hans Christian Andersen, and the Pumpkin Carriage is ready for a royal ball. Then there are the everyday adventures: a Kitchen Counter for supper, a Bunk Bed for sleepovers, and the SuitCasa, a whole mouse house that packs up like a suitcase for trips to Granny's.
This kind of play does a lot of quiet good. Children practise caring for someone, act out the big feelings of their day, build language by narrating, and stretch their imagination every time a matchbox becomes a boat. It's also wonderfully calming, which any parent who has watched a child happily whispering to a mouse for 40 minutes will tell you is priceless.
And when playtime's over? Maileg doesn't need hiding in a toy box. With their soft, muted colours and vintage-style prints, a mouse family on a bedroom shelf or a cradle on the nursery windowsill looks every bit as lovely as a piece of decor. Maileg even makes home interior pieces for children's rooms. Finally, a toy you don't mind tripping over. (Well, almost.)
Which little personalities will love Maileg?
At Binky we love matching toys to personalities, not just ages. Here's who we think will fall hardest for Maileg:
- The Curiously Creative. The storytellers and world-builders who turn a shoebox into a castle. Maileg hands them the cast and lets them write the script. Find more in our Curiously Creative edit.
- The Natural Performer. If your child stages shows in the living room (tickets required), the Ballet Mice in their Dance Studio were made for them. More stage-ready toys in Natural Performer.
- The Homebody. Quiet, cosy, happiest in their own little world. Maileg is the ultimate calm-down toy for after a busy day. See The Homebody. For the children who tuck in every teddy and take their dolly's temperature. My Cradle, the Twins and the Triplets give them plenty of babies to look after.
- The Brand-New Arrival. Not quite ready for mice? The baby range, like My First Bunny and the Lullaby Friends, makes a gorgeous first cuddly toy. Browse Newborn & Baby.
- The Grown-Up Collector. We see you. Maileg retires older designs as new ones arrive, so plenty of adults collect them too. No judgement. Lots of envy.
A quick safety note: the mice and their accessories include small parts, so always check the age guidance on each product page before buying for little ones.
Why Maileg belongs at Binky
When we choose a new brand for Binky, we ask ourselves a few simple questions. Will children actually play with it, again and again? Is it beautifully made? Will it still be loved when the novelty wears off? And does it make us smile? Maileg was a yes, a yes, a big yes and a “have you seen the tiny tricycle?!”
Maileg shares what we care about most: open-ended play that lets children lead, toys that are built to last, and a little bit of everyday magic. It's the kind of brand you buy once and keep forever. And it slots right in beside the other Binky favourites that put imagination first.
With Christmas just around the corner, the timing couldn't be better. A matchbox mouse is the stocking filler dreams are made of, and a Christmas Twin Mice set tucked into its little book is a gift that gets brought out every December for years to come.
Welcome to the family
So please give our new mice a warm Binky welcome. Hop over to the Maileg collection, say hello, and pick a favourite. Fair warning: it's very hard to pick just one. Ask us how we know.
Welcome to the family, Maileg. We're so glad you're here.
