Why we love role play

“It’s the things we play with and the people who help us play that make a great difference in our lives. ”

Fred Rogers, American television personality, 1928–2003

When I was little, I loved to play fashion designers and hairdressers, later in life I became a fashion designer. My hairdressing career finished abruptly just before starting school when my best friend and I decided to give hairdressing a go with real scissors, we wanted to be punks! We nailed it!

A couple of things were learned that day … for me that I should probably leave my cutting skills for the design room rather than the preschool hairdresser’s salon, and my poor mum that latterly hilarious parenting tales often come from the most irksome moments.

Roleplay isn’t just about replicating something within the adult world, it can also be sat firmly within the make-believe world too, really its more to do with ‘open ended play’ the form of play that has no defined boundaries and therefore can take a merry trail of discovery and learning. Broadening children’s horizons and imaginations. Its super useful too; it teaches many life skills, from communication through to problem solving, and healing.

In the words of Susan Linn, a contemporary psychiatrist.

"Play is the foundation of learning, creativity, self-expression, and constructive problem-solving. It’s how children wrestle with life to make it meaningful. ”

How to encourage role play

Role play is an invaluable tool for children. It teaches them to explore, learn, and develop essential life skills. Children step into different roles through imaginative play, imitate real-life situations, and engage in make-believe scenarios. Here are some benefits of role-play and our Binky tips to encourage at home and out and about.

  1. Enhances Social and Emotional Development: Role play fosters empathy, cooperation, and communication skills as children navigate different roles and scenarios.
  2. Fosters Language and Communication Skills: Through role play, children expand their vocabulary, practice sentence formation, and develop storytelling abilities.
  3. Stimulates Cognitive Growth: Role play promotes problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills as children engage in imaginative scenarios.
  4. Encourages Emotional Expression: Role play provides a safe outlet for emotional exploration and helps children develop emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
  5. Supports Physical and Motor Skills: Engaging in role play enhances gross and fine motor skills through physical movement and active play.

Tips for Encouraging Role Play at Home:

  1. Create a dedicated role-play area with props, costumes, and toys that inspire imaginative play; we love the Woodland Stores and Theatre
  2. Join in the play and take on different roles to encourage interactive and cooperative play; try the ice cream cart and play ice cream shop. A great way to encourage learning colours and numbers!
  3. Provide open-ended materials and toys that allow for versatile play and creativity, My Forest Floor, and allow their imaginations to run wild.
  4. Incorporate real-life scenarios and props to help children make connections between their play and the world around them; a sweet little doll's house or a mouse's little shepherd's hut.
  5. Remember, the key is to provide a variety of props and toys that reflect real-life scenarios and encourage children to connect their play with the world around them. This way, their role-play experiences become more meaningful, educational, and enjoyable.
